When you google news on road rage in India, it’s no surprise that one or two incidents are being reported almost on a daily basis. And most of them are related to brutal confrontations leading to deaths. In order to sensitise people against this rising horror of road rage, a new short film titled Road Rage is a Menace, starring Ajay Rajpal and Divya Yadav, has been released online.

The 15-minute long movie tells a story of Abir Singhaniya, played by Ajay, who gets into a scuffle after hitting a vehicle while he is on the way to pick his lady love, portrayed by Divya Yadav. However, what follows next is a twist in the tale that sends out a powerful message.

The film is the first installment of web series called That Good Ugly Day which aims to highlight multiple social issues in other 10 episodes. “We wanted to kick off the series with a subject as hard-hitting as road rage. It has almost become an epidemic,” says Ajay Rajpal, also the producer of the series.

“While we were discussing ideas, a friend told me how the attitude of people differs in India and abroad. In London, the first thing that people check after an accident is if you are safe. However, in India, we immediately get into a brawl, thanks to our ‘Tu Jaanta Nahi Mai Kaun Hun’ attitude.”

What is interesting about Road Rage is a Menace is its cinematic approach. The movie is a love story that takes a dramatic turn towards the end. “We didn’t want to give it a documentary style of narration. Even if you watch TV shows like Savdhan India or Crime Patrol, they are re-enactments of real incidents. We wanted to rather show a fiction story and possibly how to resolve a road rage incident,” he says, adding that the movie concludes with a message from AK Singh, Inspector with Delhi Traffic Police.

Ajay was last seen in Anushka Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh starrer Phillauri, where he played a small character that gave him ‘significant exposure to big productions.’ However, he was more interested in engaging with new age media which he calls ‘the future of entertainment’. He is also in talks with mobile-based entertainment hubs like Netflix and Amazon Prime to broadcast That Good Ugly Day. “I think the new media is more real than other mediums of entertainment. Therefore, we are auditioning real people and theatre artists to cast in our web series rather than seasoned actors. For instance, we are featuring transgender activist in an episode based on their life,” Ajay signs off.
