ON BEING A BEACON
‘Celebrities are just a voice people are willing to listen to. Otherwise, there are huge bodies and forces working for greater good of the society.’

ON HER STRUGGLE
‘When you begin your career, you have to do what comes your way. You haven’t proved yourself. People don’t know about your abilities. Once they acknowledge your talent and worth, you are in a better position to make informed choices.’

ON HER MOVIES
‘I come from a family with strong women. I have always gravitated towards strong characters on screen. These roles also reflect varied emotions in a woman’s life. For Tezaab, I have Parinda or Prahaar. For Hum Aapke Hain Koun, I have Mrityudand. For Dil Toh Pagal Hai, I have Pukar. Of late, I have Aaja Nachle and Gulaab Gang.’

ON RAISING KIDS
‘Let’s start with the boys. I feel responsible because I have got two boys. I want them to grow up to be responsible citizens. I want them to work for community. What we do, as parents, is going to inspire them. So I hope we are able to set appropriate examples. At our house, Ram and I work together. I support what he does and he supports and I do. So there’s equal footing at home. My kids see that day in and day out. I expect my children to respect everyone, whether it’s woman or a man, someone’s who’s working for them or teaching them.’

HER ROLE MODEL
‘My mother has been the greatest inspiration to me. She belonged to a small village of Ratnagiri and her family was very orthodox. She got married in a family which was very progressive. So she had to adjust there and raise a family of four kids. But she always wanted to educate herself. She did her MA in Music after having four kids. I salute my mother for the way she stood by me since beginning of my career. She always guided me to be who I am. I am confident today because of the lessons she taught me.’

ON GENDER INEQUALITY
‘Life cannot be without hope. If you stop hoping, you would stop living. There was a time in the film industry when I would walk onto the sets and look around me, the only women used to be the female characters in the movie or the hairdressers. Sometimes, maybe a stylist or a choreographer. Today, when I look around, I find women in every department. From camera persons to script writers, directors to editors, women have taken by storm. So there’s hope.’
