JATIN VARMA, founder of the Golden Kela Awards that honour the worst of Hindi cinema every year, asks Bollywood to take a chill pill. Over to SHREYANSH RAWAT

Golden Kela Awards
Jatin Varma

Well, we have got a reason when we call him the most hated man in Bollywood. After all, he has founded the Golden Kela Awards, which for the past eight years, have been ridiculing top stars for their ‘infamous’ acts on screen. Who else than Jatin Varma would have thought of honouring Shah Rukh Khan and Sonam Kapoor for their sheer audacity to make meaningless cinema. But trust us, we just love these Kela awards. They are more fun than criticism. While Hollywood took almost 30 years to recognise The Golden Raspberry Awards or Razzie Awards, their Indian counterpart, the Golden Kela Awards, have already got some token acceptance in the filmdom. At the recent award ceremony, where Dilwale turned out to be the worst movie while Sooraj Pancholi bagged the worst actor trophy (Hero), we caught up with Jatin to share his thoughts about the awards and knocking down filmstars in full public glare.

Excerpts from an interview:

You have successfully finished eight editions. That’s quite a feat, especially when you’re offering brickbat to film stars.
It’s been very interesting journey. Sometimes we scale it up, sometimes we try to do it small. But it’s always fun.

The awards have also got recognition from film stars like Aamir Khan and Karan Johar.
Yeah, sometimes actors talk about them. Abhishek Bacchan had tweeted ‘Chalo Kuch Toh Mila’ when got a Golden Kela for Delhi 6. Aamir Khan too acknowledged it saying “I love the Golden Kela” when we honoured Shah Rukh Khan for My Name is Khan. Lyricist Anvita Dutt herself received her trophy for the worst song Ishq Wala Love. Director Abhishek Sharma attended the ceremony last year and got the Baawra Ho Gaya Hai Ke award for film The Shaukeens.

Do you think Bollywood actors are sporty enough to laugh at their own work?
For the first edition, we sent out letters to all the nominees. But nobody replied. That was a clear signal that they won’t be coming forward to accept criticism. I think they have their logic too. Why would one admit that they fooled the audience? If you consider other reasons, there is a great investment on big films. So they film stars want to protect their commercial interest by skipping ceremonies that honour the ‘worst’. But I think they should realise that it is for fun and there’s no intention to harm their image.

What’s the roadmap for the Golden Kela, considering the 10th anniversary is approaching?
We have tried a lot of things in the past. We experimented with format by making it a comedy show. But now we want to keep simple and primarily an award show. For the 10th edition, we must do something big.
