While Bollywood heroes continue to remain tight-lipped about male-female pay disparity in the film industry, their Hollywood counterparts have started speaking up frankly on the issue. Harry Potter superstar Daniel Radcliffe has expressed his anguish on unequal payment to actors on the basis of gender. As reported in Perez Hilton, he told Australia’s Daily Telegraph that he was unaware of this phenomenon until recently.
“I’m incredibly glad it has come up because I had just f*cking naively thought this was not an issue any more because how can this still be happening? It’s crazy. It is definitely the time for our industry to step up. Especially if we want to pride ourselves on being a liberal, progressive industry then you can’t be doing that,” Radcliffe confessed.
The issue was hyped by Jennifer Lawrence in her widely-circulated letter, followed up by leaks on Amy Adams’ salary on American Hustle. The actresses were paid much lesser than male actors in the movie. Patricia Arquette too had delivered a passionate call for equal pay at the 2015 Academy Awards.

The American Hustle issue opened Radcliffe’s eyes who’s annoyed at prevailing sexism in the industry. “What I found shocking about the whole American Hustle thing — and please correct me if I’m wrong — but if I have this right, they had all the boys on one deal and all the girls on another deal. That, to me, is shocking … stuff like that is crazy and the thing I can’t help but think is ‘Who? Who’s doing that? What guy is sitting in a studio somewhere thinking let’s f*ck the girls out of some money?'”
He has urged writers to pen more meaty roles for women to ensure pay parity. “I feel like there’s such a wealth of amazing actresses in the world right now and we’ve got to start writing better parts for them and paying them equally,” he said.
