India’s Censor Board continued to overreact as they ordered removal of all light-hearted references to Mahatma Gandhi in Ok Jaanu. However, that was not shocking given the infamous past of CBFC poking their ‘moral’ nose in almost every film’s release. What was rather disappointing was casual response to censorship by the star cast of Ok Jaanu. It seems that they are quite joyous over the U/A certificate that the film has received from the Board. The lead pair, Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, played down the question of censorship while promoting their film in Delhi.

“These interactions happen between the director, producer and the Censor Board. The actors have no role to play in it. But if this is what they have asked for and if they felt that we were disrespecting any historical or public figure, then I completely accept their decision,” Aditya Roy Kapur said. At that point, Shraddha remained mum.

Don’t Miss: ‘I’m Gay. I’m an actor. & I’ve got a message for you all’

The manner in which the actor complied with the Board’s verdict seemed to be an attempt to avoid any controversies with the Censor Board. However, their remarks were rather callous and their attitude ignorant, especially when most of their colleagues in the film industry have stood against the interference of the Censor Board. Earlier in 2016, the big shots like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Mahesh Bhatt reasoned against cuts imposed on Udta Punjab. Others like Anushka Sharma and Kangana Ranaut have voiced their opinions in the past on oversensitive behaviour of the Censor Board.

However, the unlikely views of both the young actors, Aditya and Shraddha, reeks of complacency and once again makes us raise crucial questions revolving around freedom and diplomacy.
