Transgender model Anjali Lama became head-turner at Monisha Jaising’s show
The spectacular venue of a cruise and showstopper Sonakshi Sinha were not the only reason to watch out at Monisha Jaising’s opening show, held in Mumbai. There was another striking face which grabbed the attention of the fashionistas there. Transgender model Anjali Lama walked the ramp, carrying herself with panache and breaking gender stereotypes. The journey to the runway was, however, not without challenges and disapproval.
Born as Nabin Waiba in the Nuwakot village of Nepal, she always had a penchant to do something different. Lama acknowledged that she was a transgender in 2005. From being mocked at by classmates for walking like a girl, to dealing with her own confusion regarding her sexuality, Anjali Lama has come a long way by breaking the fashion barriers in India. Dressing in a woman’s attire and wearing makeup by borrowing it from a friend made her feel more like herself. At the age of 32, she had a documentary made on her life Anjali- living inside someone else’s skin.
She believes that walking for the LFW is the greatest achievement of her career so far, after being rejected by LFW the previous year. Lama believes that being picked on the basis of her merit and not publicity is a landmark in the fashion industry and sets a bold example.
Another gender neutral model Petr Nitka will give a debut and walk the runway at the Fashion week. Petr Nitka and Anjali Lama’s rise has been nothing short of a boost for people aspiring to be something in life, scared to face the society because of the gender stereotypes. The fashion industry has seen some major revolutions and break various stereotypes recently, from plus sized models and pregnant women gracing various premier fashion shows.
