The Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra, which enthralled hundreds of culture vultures at the opening act of Delhi International Arts Festival at Purana Qila, has developed a new taste in India. They are in love with Indian curries, and especially Indian chicken recipes. The 8-member group, led by Dr Wu Shih Yin, landed here last week and has been exploring all that is truly Indian. “Besides chicken and curries, we also liked Gulab Jamun,” said Yin, struggling to recall dishes. Like other tourists, they also headed straight to Agra to experience the eternal script of Taj Mahal. “We have heard so much about Taj Mahal. It is one of the most admired wonders of the world. We found it great and historic. It was evidently a true heritage of love,” said Yin, who’s also a professor from National Yilan University, Taiwan.

The Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra performed five acts here, one of which was collaboration with the Bamboo Symphony from Kerala. They just rehearsed for a few minutes for the fusion. “We feel music and there was a natural coordination among us. We just struck a musical bond,” he said. The artistes performed ensembles with a variety of bamboo instruments such as Bamboom, Bamboo Xylophone, Ding-Dong, Boorimba and Slapp-ing Bamboo.

The Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra has famously played score for Mission Impossible in Hong Kong. “We generally don’t do music for films, though we have composed for a movie The Sounds of Music,” he said.

The group was formed three years ago and connected with Pratibha Prahlad, the director of DIAF, at one of the Taiwanese events. “She invited us immediately. We agreed as we wanted to perform in India,” said Yin, who also finds Indian music ‘unique’.

“The classical music is so elaborate and grammatically rich that you need ages to learn about it,” he said.
