WGSN released its report on Spring Summer 2016 trends at the Amazon India Fashion Week! Here’s what we concluded from the paper:

COLOUR MESSAGE

Pink is the big message for the season’s trends. The range and breadth of pink is far reaching, from the bright pop pinks to saturated candy pastels, and deeper pinks for a head to toe statement. These ultra sweet hues are also great for accessories and footwear and are a very commercial choice. Pink can be used across a wide range of items from sheers, denim and shiny wovens to softened tones of pink with embroidery details and new textures for a more elegant and dressed up look.

Lava red serves a dual purpose for the summer palette, working as both a key bright and forming part of an intense earthen palette. Lava reds will have a versatility, injecting a bold bright to first deliveries and then throughout the season, merchandised with the baked earth browns. This red leans towards the orange palette also use for beach and pool side loungewear.

FABRIC MESSAGE

Broderie anglaise makes a comeback as a key fashion fabric with intricate designs, prettifying line dresses, blouses and bottom weights. White cotton is the leading fabric choice, for this seasons defining fabric, Broderie  angalise is very versatile and can be used as an all-over or for panel placements. The broderie mini dress and playsuit are key items for the summer. The newest developments are for cut-out placement patterns or all – over cutwork fabrics, especially for the bared shouldered blouse.

Eka

Lace: Wonderful contemporary lace looks for feminine styling and silhouette. Lace is used with great effect for traditional, sari-styling and tunic tops.

Rustic fabrics: The rustic look can be used for tunics, dresses and separates for a more relaxed feel. This is a good transitional fabric story. And looking at some of the garment collections here, take a look at a company called Eka, that has a beautiful simplicity, with a natural rustic feel.

Bohemian pattern mixes are used for dresses and blouses and continue from previous seasons with a fresh new look. Contrasting prints are cut and spliced and collaged together for a high summer look.

Key items: The shirt-waister silhouette, moves blouse–dresses, in a more feminine direction.

This will work, from western styling, through to more blousy and billowing sheers and prairie looks.

Maxi -skirts have been performing well, certainly helped along by festival looks and the bohemian styles. This thigh-split maxi offers a new way to work this skirt and will be versatile from contemporary tailoring, to clean sporty looks. It is most likely to find its success as a layered bohemian sheer skirt.

Duster coats have been bubbling under for a couple of seasons and are now beginning to take hold at retail across global regions. These soft coats are really beginning to take off in a big way. Soft dusters and trenches are building on the success of the kimono and again have that fluid femininity which is so important for the season. Sleeveless designs feel newer and will work best for press material and store or online merchandising.

Key messages for jumpsuit: The jumpsuit is updated in wide and flared–leg designs for SS 16, offering a pivotal piece for press and marketing material. Floaty retro styles in lightweight fabrics with wide floor-sweeping hemlines,  look strong. More accessible are the midi and knee-length versions. The jumpsuit ranges from evening looks to an evolution of the wide-leg culotte or even a more utilitarian dungaree/apron look. The apron-style has become a direction from the latest western catwalk shows with wide pinafore– style straps as a standout detail.

KEY ACCESSORIES

Crystals sit well for all markets. At the Amazon India Fashion Week, we look at clear, cut raw crystals alongside rougher surfaces, working across items from rings to earrings. Crystals bring a fresh organic feel for jewellery assortments. This is a great direction for both fine and costume jewellery.

The arm cuff makes a return and has already been doing the rounds at many of the festivals worldwide. This has an obvious hippy styling reference but look at cleaner pieces and some of the architectural constructions to take this through to smarter looks.

Hair charms: Ornately embellished hair accessories with floral and vintage inspired designs, feature a combination of precious and semi-precious gem stones. These charms feel distinctly opulent and couture like.
