A Times of India report today claimed that the film Aligarh is not releasing in the city of Aligarh. The movie is getting rave reviews from both the audience and critics alike. However, a number of complaints and objections from local groups and politicians have prevented distributors to release the movie in Aligarh.

Aligarh is based on the life of AMU professor Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, who was suspended by the university for the ‘crime’ of being homosexual.

BJP’s mayor Shakuntala Bharti thinks that the movie would “link the city with homosexuality” while a local group Millat Bedari Muhim Committee has also written to cabinet ministers Arun Jaitley and Ravi Shankar Prasad, and to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to change the name of the film as it “besmirches our city”.

The TOI report says that Aligarh Muslim University’s PRO Rahat Abrar had earlier stated that he would take legal action against the filmmakers if required. He was bothered about “misrepresentation of the city or university”. Abrar claimed that the varsity didn’t give any permission to shoot the film. Former AMU students’ union vice-president Syed Masud-ul-Hasan has rejected the film saying, “Films must not be encouraged to portray such relationships. I feel it’s a criminal activity. Films should have a positive message for the youth.”

Director of Aligarh, Hansal Mehta, called it “a homophobic decision”. “They do not want Aligarh to be linked with homosexuality, but now they will be linked with homophobia,” he said. Scriptwriter Apurva Asrani said that the “Opponents of the film will have to come to terms with the fact that 2 per cent of India’s population is from the LGBT community.”
