Review: The good and the ugly side of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil!

Karan Bhardwaj tells you why Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is the most faking film of the year. There is not much redemption though…

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Ranbir Kapoor & Anushka Sharma promoting Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in Delhi/SHOOTING HILL

FAKE EMOTIONS
Fake it till you make it. Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor are totally adamant to prove this notion. Their chemistry lacks fire, intensity and connectivity. There’s no natural camaraderie on screen. By the time you start to understand their ‘friendship’, half of the film is already gone. There’s no background to characters, which make it even more superficial.

BAD NOSTALGIA
Self-indulgence can either be destructive or entertaining. There’s nothing in between the two. In this case, it is catastrophic. You just keep thinking why they are dancing on old songs? Why the hell is Johar spoiling nostalgia of his own iconic movies?

RANBIR IS REPETITIVE
How many times are we going to see Ranbir Kapoor like a rockstar, lost in love? ADHM is bad concoction of so many films on this theme. We have seen Ranbir giving similar expressions in ditto circumstances before also. Johar cannot be Imtiaz Ali.

AISHWARYA RAI IS A PROP!
Aishwarya Rai looks so stunning that she actually becomes a distraction in the movie. You don’t want to see Anushka and Ranbir back together. But then she comes and disappears without making any significant contribution to the plot. You can easily think of the story with any other random girl. It’s a bad idea to use Aishwarya as a prop in a love story of two younger folks.

LOVE OR LUST?
Ranbir is dying for Anushka’s love but he is enjoying sex with Aishwarya Rai everyday, every minute. Aishwarya is a mature woman, a poetess and divorcee. But she yearns for sex with ‘immature’ Ranbir right from their first encounter. I thought she knew Ranbir is in love with Anushka forever yet she awakens one day and asks the boy to get lost. But in all this, there are non-stop bullets of loaded Hindi and Urdu shayari to make lust look like love. I’m confused.

DISEASED, REALLY?
If you think it cannot get worse, you are wrong. This unnecessary, stupid and not at all shocking twist in the tale is so anti-intellect. Annoying!

THERE’S NO CLIMAX
I am yet to comprehend the message and the film is over. #Friendzoned forever.

PS: Lisa Haydon is a gold digger. But Anushka enjoying perks of being Ranbir’s friends is a fraaandship. Cool hai?

(Don’t Miss) OPINION: Karan Johar is no Sajjan Jindal in Modi’s India!

BRIGHT SIDE OF THE FILM

MUSIC
It is good even though there’s a bad jibe at Mohammad Rafi. Arijit’s voice is attractive.

ACTING
It’s is Ranbir’s film all the way. Anushka does strike in a few scenes but then there’s too much of effort. Aishwarya is stunning but has limited role to play.

FUN
The first half has some funny moments, silly jokes that entertain you. But you constantly want to rise above them and watch some good cinema. High hopes!
