Cotton

After receiving thumping response for #IWearHandloom campaign a few weeks ago, textile minister Smriti Irani kickstarted yet another campaign #CottonisCool on social media, this time to boost the cotton industry. Few minutes after it was announced by Irani herself, the hashtag (CottonisCool) started trending on Twitter. She tagged five fellow Tweeples and requested them to start a chain. Result: Cotton emerged as the top most trend of the day. “Today, India is one of the largest cotton producing nations & cotton has become the ultimate summer fabric (sic),” Irani wrote on Twitter.

Joining the Ministry’s campaign, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) has requested fashionistas to post their ‘cotton look’. Mr Sunil Sethi, president, FDCI, said, “FDCI has always supported different kinds of fabrics in the country. In 2015, we engaged with khadi where we closely worked with the Gujarat government. In 2016, we did a massive project in Banaras with the textile ministry, fashion designers and weavers. Later that year, we also endorsed government’s handloom initiative,” he says, adding that cotton is the national fabric, worn by masses and classes. “Be it kurta of a neta, t-shirt of a college going student, lungi in South India, langoth of pehelwans, gorgeous cotton saris of women or traditional jhola or kurtas of intelligentsia, cotton is the staple fabric of nation,” he told Born of Web.

As ‘Cotton is Cool’ becomes a rage online, we pick top 10 looks from the campaign which are drawing maximum cheers on Twitter!
