The GIG Carnival is all about the best of food, craft and music. By Karan Bhardwaj
If you are a lover of great music and even greater food, you must attend the The Great Indian Golchakkar carnival being held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. We landed there on Friday and were amazed by the fascinating blend of food, music and craft. Delicious aromas of authentic cuisines from various nooks and corners of the country welcomed us as we made our way to the music stage where Midival Punditz were rehearsing for the final gig in the evening. We give you a few reasons why the GIG Carnival is your destination this weekend (Feb 5-7)!
FOOD GLORY
It’s a pure heaven for foodies. The organisers have brought popular cooks and eateries from various states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bengal, Meghalaya and Nagaland. There are some who have agreed to step out of their territories for the first time. Delhi’s Jama Masjid’s famous joint Aslam Chicken is ruling to roost. Not to mention, the biryanis and niharis are just lip-smacking! We also tasted Amritsari chole kulche from Sheesh Mahal Kulche Wala (Amristar) and Rambabu’s gobhi, matar ke paranthe from Agra. Outstanding! Don’t you worry, if street food is not your choice, the brands and food chains are also camping there.
CRAFT BAZAAR
The GIG Carnival is a rare opportunity to experience exotic legacy of art and culture. A perfume maker from Kannauj (UP), GK Chaurasia has brought traditional fragrances exclusively. From flowers to soil, plants to mehndi, he uses natural resources to make rare perfumes. We recommend mitti from his collection. The perfume catches fresh aroma that exudes from soil after downpour. Awesome!
There’s wide range of craft on display. Rogan art from Gujarat, Jamdani ftom Benaras and silver filigree works from Orissa make up for the visual appeal. Manipur’s stone pottery is selling like hot cakes. The artisans told us that the products are in great demand in foreign countries.
MUSIC
OPUS Ft. ISH, Superfuzz, Sandunes, Papon & The East India Company are performing tonight (Saturday). On Sunday, the line up is even more amazing. Samadhi will begin the show followed by Your Chin and Prateek Kuhad. The curtains will be drawn by Advaita and Karsh Kale Collective.
We are totally impressed by the ‘labour’ of love’ put forth by the organiser, Sonny Walia.
