The opening act at Purana Qila today, Vande Matram, directed by festival director Pratibha Prahlad, will combine nine classical dances.
Known for their score for Mission Impossible, the Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra, led by director Wu Shih-Yin, will also be performing tonight
The 9th edition of Delhi International Arts Festival (DIAF) starts today with never-seen-before performances. At Purana Qila, a historic monument in the national capital, nine Indian classical dances will be presented in one performance, Vande Matram, choreographed by festival director Pratibha Prahlad. The 15-day long event is presented by Prasiddha Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture. Born of Web is the official online partner of the festival, that features 60 events in the next two weeks at various venues across the city/NCR.
Vande Matram will be followed by a cross cultural fusion between the ‘The Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra’ and the ‘Bamboo Symphony’ from Kerala. Then there is a SOOF Ensemble comprising musicians from Africa, the Middle East and Israel besides Whirling Dervish and Traditional Dances, with performers from Egypt.
The Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra, led by director Wu Shih-Yin, is known for their composition for Mission Impossible. The DIAF this year, would also have an international segment “Look East” with performances by the Chongqing National Opera from the Sichuan province of China, ‘Lovebird Spears’, an Opera, Martial arts and Chinese Drums from Taiwan, Taiwanese Bamboo Orchestra, Legong and Samatra dance from Indonesia and a cross-cultural music Band from Singapore. “Look West” would include famous bands from USA, Israel, Czech Republic, Poland& Turkey, Flamenco music from Spain, Salsa from Mexico, contemporary dance theatre from Portugal & France and Tap Dance from the United Kingdom.
Performances from “Central Asia” would include music and dance from Kyrgyzstan and Russia whereas Jordan would perform from the prism of “West Asia” art forms. DIAF would also feature “Welcome Africa” and “Africa in India”, wherein, many African countries including Egypt, Ghana, Ethiopia, Zambia, Nigeria, Congo, Uganda and Kenya will take part at DIAF. The concept has been worked on the lines of India-Africa Forum Summit 2015, the latter taking place around the same time in Delhi. The Indian artistic component like every year has a rich spread of Indian classical dance, classical music, folk dance and music.
