Dr Priyanka Tyagi

Leading cosmetologist and aesthetician Dr Priyanka Tyagi, also founder of Omorfia Aesthetic Clinic, says there’s a lot of significance of right aesthetics in one’s life. Over to Malvika Nanda

While growing up, her career aspirations were often found swinging in between the likelihood of becoming a pilot (her father’s wish) and businesswoman (her wish), given the strong affect her businessman father had on her. The thought of pursuing anything remotely closer to the science stream didn’t cross her mind till high school, when she got a little break due to her father’s brief illness. That period gave her time to think through her options ahead. As a teen, Priyanka was chased by nasty acne breakouts that got her told off too many times by her father, who constantly encouraged her to work on her overall presentation – read as shoo away the acne, because that’s possible.

That incident sent then daddy’s obedient little girl, on the path of research and discovery towards the science of skin and aesthetics, and there has been no looking back. “My father wanted me to take my skin issues seriously and take care of them, till the extent that he told me he won’t speak to me till I actually do something about the matter… I can’t say what his exact reasoning was at that time, maybe he wanted his kids to be perfect or he wanted to ensure that we learn to present ourselves well. Whatever the reason, to me the incident highlighted the actual importance of good skin treatments and aesthetics. I got myself treated and then set off to explore different elementary and advance level courses and programmes through the years that led me to study in Nagpur, Pune, Mumbai and then London,” she says.

She took a few more breaks to step back and think, work in different environments that taught her the ropes as far as clinical formulations, technology, training, industry standards, and management along with various others facets of this growing category of cosmetology and aesthetics.

During the aforementioned breaks Priyanka also got married… to a pilot nonetheless, fulfilling another of her father’s desire in a manner of speaking, as her father always wanted her to become a pilot. With the unflinching support of her in-laws, she continued her journey towards aesthetics.

Before she stepped into business, she gathered significant experience studying and working in various set ups in the nascent industry of skin care and aesthetics. She became a Formulation Scientist in skincare, especially for cosmetics, before she studied nano technology.

Priyanka felt strongly about clinical formulations for the betterment of skin care and joined a clinic in Delhi (Clinic Dermatec) that put their faith in her belief, allowing her to put her ideas and knowhow, in to practice.  “After I worked with this clinic, I had explored my fair share of experience building process from formulations to administrative understanding of running a set up, management along with other things. Meanwhile I got the opportunity to work with an international skin care brand where I explored different portfolios relate to retail, sales, training, marketing and promotions. Now those services offered by the brand were targeted at salon, while I came from a medical background and that is when I realised the big gap in industry.

Internationally salons are equipped to handle specialised skincare treatments such as Laser, Chemical Peels, Body Shaping etc. Although they were a few places around that time that tried to present this combination, none of them were up to the mark. Some lacked training, the others didn’t have sufficient technology or equipment and most of them lacked basic standards.”

That’s how her latest venture, ‘Omorfia Aesthetic Clinic’, came into being, where she is combining salon and clinical aesthetic services. She is also consulting various aesthetic centres and salons in different cities like Jammu, Siliguri, Nagpur, Chennai and others. “Moving on from proper training and instituting such multi-utility outlets, now I’m certifying personnel/therapists also. In India, it is sad to see so many places that don’t even have certified and well-trained therapists. The staff is only trained cosmetically by the brands that provide laser equipment. I’m getting the staff I work with certified by a valid international institution that ensures they have the proper know how and are not only trained well but also authorised to carry out these procedures. And mind you the certification is not an easy process, it’s thorough and time consuming. But I want to raise the standards of the services and the service providers. The result is a far more professional environment, more effective and thereby quicker. The one stop skincare and aesthetics stations is the need of the hour, considering people’s inclination towards looking good and feeling good and why not when we can have access to world class facilities… My motive is not to produce sales or deal with hefty volumes but to provide a holistic personalised experience.”

Priyanka doesn’t just believe in providing standardised services but also a good counsel. “I like to sit with my clients and chat with them about what they feel their need is. Is a professional requirement or a social need and whether they need what they walked in their mind with or maybe there could be another solution to their problem… The whole idea is to make clinical approach to skincare and aesthetics accessible to more people and with good standards and not just confined to clinics to the metro, says Priyanka.

Efficiency, safety and standards in place, Priyanka is now moving towards bringing a host of specialised international brands to expand the horizons of the variety of services available. She recently introduced a well-known vegan brand for all those who prefer a certain kind of products, be it for their food for skincare. So in the world swimming with chemicals there is a space for people who want chemical-free, ethical brands that are not only good for the skin but also environment friendly.

So, not just is she wanting to bridge the gap between salons and clinics but she also seeks to introduce and make available more experiences that spell spa-salon in the same breath.
