It was a much-discussed private function in India way back in 2009 when Akshata Murty and Rishi Sunak tied the knot. We spoke to ace designer Ritu Beri who put together multiple looks for the bride
With Rishi Sunak taking over as the prime minister of U.K., Indians have found a reason to cheer. Congratulatory notes continue to pour in for Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty, who happens to be the daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy and author, activist Sudha Murty. Global Indian designer Ritu Beri fondly recalled her memories with Murtys when she dressed up Akshata for her big wedding day way back in 2009. It was Sudha Murty who approached Beri to design outfits for her daughter. “We did multiple outfits for her, not just for bridal but also for her wedding reception. Our outfits grabbed a lot of media attention back then. For me, she was a special bride because I adore Sudha Murty a lot,” recalled Beri.
There were several interactions on selection of designs, but Murtys chose to keep it simple, as expected. “However, the wedding reception gown was extravagant,” shared Beri, who finds Akshata “elegant, chic and understated.”
When news broke recently about Rishi Sunak becoming the PM, Beri was “absolutely delighted but not shocked.” “We were hoping him to win in the last run as well against Liz Truss. As an Indian, it is a matter of pride and is truly inspiring moment,” she said.
The Indian designer has had a spectacular run herself in the global fashion scenario for more than two decades and is also the recipient of France’s highest civilian honour. Has she kept anything special for Akshata now? “Not really. But I want her to come back to me. It would be fun to dress her up again for her formal and informal occasions. She is in a perfect shape,” rounded off Beri.
