One of the biggest New Year parties which went almost unnoticed was that of Dangal superstar Aamir Khan. However, it was quite ‘magical’, the Aamir Khan way! By Karan Bhardwaj
I had gone being told that I had to perform for 45 minutes. I did an act which has shaped me as a performer over the years. It includes tricks based on stories from my childhood, stories of my grandfather who influenced me a lot and stories of how I came up with my best tricks. I was planning on ending the 45-minute show with a trick I had customised based on Dangal. Six people had to think of digits which when put together become the release date of Dangal. The show was received so well that I kept getting asked to do more by Aamir, Kiran Rao and Prasoon Joshi to name a few people. So eventually I ended up performing for 2 hours and 15 minutes, including a trick for Azad (Aamir and Kiran’s son).
It was a dream come true for me. Performing for people who appreciate the art so much, whoever they may be is always a dream. For them to be so successful in their own right and being so appreciative of my art form was a very humbling experience.
I was there for 3 days and was scheduled to perform on the 30th evening. On the 29th evening I was performing off stage for small groups of people. Jackie Shroff gave me one of my best reactions which is one video and will be uploaded later this week on my social media pages. On 30th, when I was scheduled to perform because of the hype that had been built up by my close up performances, Aamir Khan asked me if I’d be willing to do the grand finale of his party and perform on the 31st night instead because everyone was so looking forward to it and it made sense to have it on the finale. I jumped at the opportunity. Other reactions included Jackie Shroff walking out after a trick saying, “I can not see more. This is too much.” Vidya Balan being driven speechless and unable to say anything after a trick I did for her. And eventually when I did perform on stage, I got a standing ovation at my very first trick which was followed up by people like Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Prasoon Joshi and Avinash Gowariker coming up on stage and hugging me after every trick which was a very very special feeling.
It was a lot of fun. Being around such people is always a humbling experience but to get to perform for Aamir Khan and his guests from the industry was something that I can’t wait to do again.
I’m looking to get back into doing corporate shows and shows for colleges as the college fest season begins and then do 2-3 theatre shows around the year which are my pet projects. I’m also doing a secret project with someone I met at the party which I’m not allowed to talk about yet, so when it comes around, you’ll be the first to know
