Two-time Filmfare awardee Sukhwinder Singh spoke to Chhavi Jain about his latest track Udi Udi Jaye, Filmfare row and much more!
‘Would love to recreate classics’
Given a chance, Singh said he would love to recreate old Bollywood tracks. “I live in the present, but the past is not a graveyard. I would love to do covers for old songs, as recreating the classics is also an art that is an expression of reverence for the past,” he said.
‘I never say NO’
Whether big or small, Singh claimed he would never refuse to sing for any music director. “I only ask them whether they have time. I can’t perform in emergencies,” he said. A versatile singer, he has given hits in different formats. “Any song I do, I take the liberty to meddle with it in my own way. That is the only way to bring out the passion in the songs, by immersing myself fully and then go ahead,” he said.

‘(Amaal) limelight me to aaya’
Amaal Malik created an online storm after lashing out at Filmfare for nominating undeserving artistes. Sukhwinder Singh, a two-time Filmfare awardee, called out on award ceremonies in general but also took a dig at Malik for hogging limelight. “Ye kehne ke baad wo limelight mein to aaya,” he instantly uttered. Singh agreed that the process of nominations and winners is not bereft of loopholes. Without naming anybody in particular, Singh said he was shocked to find a music director lobbying for a particular vocalist at an award function, where he was also a part of jury. “Because of one person, the entire weight of the decision can create imbalances. But the nominations are not 100 per cent fake either. The ones who are deserving are rewarded for sure.” He also acknowledged Amaal Malik’s comments as bold with a definite hint of truth in them.
Udi Udi Jaye was an easy one
Singh’s latest track Udi Udi Jaye from Raees has turned out to be a chartbuster. “The song has an expression of Garba. It was very interesting song and an easy one to record. I travel a lot as a performer. I am fond of Garba, and every Navratri I go to dance with my friends to its ‘rangeen’ (colorful) beats,” he said. Explaining the making of the track, Singh elucidated, “Ram Sampath approached me with this song saying “naachne ka mood bana lo” (get ready to dance), and I got really excited. It took us 15-20 minutes in all to do the song.”
Next, Sukhwinder Singh has crooned for Jolly LLB 2, Rangoon and Raju Hirani’s untitled biopic of Sanjay Dutt.
