Sri Lanka hosted Global Ceylon Tea party in over 30 nations, including India, at the same time to celebrate 150 years of country’s tea industry!
When a few diplomats, their friends and city’s lifestyle ambassadors gathered last week at the Sri Lankan embassy in Delhi, they were apparently joined by thousands of their counterparts in national capitals of various countries at the same time. Reason? Sri Lanka hosted one of the biggest tea affairs to mark 150 years of country’s tea industry. The event took place on July 6 at 5 PM in every time zone from east to west across the world.

Speakers shared their thoughts on tea, introduction of the beverage in the Asian subcontinent, and how it became a quintessential element of the Indian lifestyle. “We love tea, and we drink it a lot. If we did not consume tea the way we do, we would have pipped Sri Lanka to become the second largest exporter of tea in the world,” quipped Rita A Teaotia, Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry.
Tea exporters also demonstrated the art of making a perfect tea. “We had shifted to Sri Lanka but have come back to India. Now, we retail in markets here,” said one of the exporters from India.
An assortment of Sri Lankan delicacies along with a variety of tea were served, where Sri Lankan High Commissioner Chitraganee Wagiswara, was personally attending the guests.
