After Vidya Balan lauded Kangana Ranaut for standing up firm against a mountain of criticism over multiple controversies related to her past affairs with actors Hrithik Roshan and Adyayan Suman, national award-winning actress Kalki Koechlin has slammed the hate brigade. #CharacterlessKanganaRanaut was trending on Twitter moments before Kangana received her national award for Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

Kalki, who also received the honour for Margartia With A Straw, told Born of Web that she expects people to judge celebrities on the basis of their merit and not gender or gossips. “A person is as good as his or her work. Kangana Ranaut is an extremely talented actress, one of the best performers we have. She is natural as well as a versatile artiste who keeps surprising her audience with her ability to do serve different on screen. Queen was a huge benchmark for all of us. When you are in doubt about a person’s character, you need to look at the body of work and the way they live their life. It’s a question of merit which I keep talking about. A person should be judged on the merit of their work and not on gender or their one-time big headline about specific circumstance,” said Koechlin over the phone from Arunachal Pradesh. The actress, known for her unconventional choices, is shooting a special travel show for Fox Life channel, featuring her bike trip with her father across north east .

“We are targetted because we are celebrities. That becomes really distracting. Gossip cannot tell you the real person. Look at our work to look beyond gossips,” she said.
