Veteran designer Madhu Jain is doing a runway show in Paris under government’s ‘Namaste France’ initiative. By Karan Bhardwaj
Textile revivalist Madhu Jain last presented her runway show in 2008. Now it’s time for a grand comeback for her as the veteran designer is all set to do a runway show in Paris. The show, which is a part of a larger fashion week under government’s ongoing ‘Namaster France’ initiative, will be taking place next week at the Eiffel Tower. “I stopped doing runway shows long back because I prefer personal interactions with my clients and guests,” says the designer, who presented her repertoire in three cities this year: Delhi (Ogaan), Mumbai (Ensemble) and Chennai (Amethyst). But this time, “the venue was so iconic that I couldn’t resist. Plus, this is an opportunity to show Paris what we are up to.”
Madhu, who calls her fashion show ‘a moment to represent rich Indian textiles yet again’, will be showing a mix of ikkat, kalamkari, intricate banni mirror work and banjara embroidery in her clothes, all painstaking crafts that she has been known for. “There are going to be 25 pieces,” she says.

In the last two years, there has been a revival of sorts for Indian handlooms and textiles, specially through multiple initiatives by the government, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, and also FDCI’s consistent efforts in provide platform to designers working in this area. Earlier this year, Madhu undersigned a special project to re-introduce Gujarat’s rare textiles and embroideries like Suf and Banni. “I started textiles when designers were upbeat about machine-made fabrics like georgette, net and chiffon. All I wanted to do was the re-introduction of heritage craft that dates back to the times of Ramayana and Mahabharata,” says the designer, who presented a whole range on Kalamkari some 25 years ago.
The “French European Indian Fashion Week” is scheduled to take place at the Eiffel tower during on October 21-23, 2016. Other participating designers include Poonam Bhagat, Nida Mahmood, Mandira Wirk and more.
