Actor and producer Arfi Lamba, who has made his presence felt in acclaimed movies such as Slumdog Millionaire, Singh Is Bling, Fugly, Prague, says independent cinema has a long way to cover in India. His last notable production LOEV, which is a love story of two men, has been doing rounds at international film festivals. “It has gone to 45 film festivals. It’s now available on Netflix,” says Lamba.

In 2017, he acted in a German film, GIFT, which was released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  He also acted in and produced a short film, The Idiot. Directed by Ruchi Joshi, the film was premiered in New York, and was in competition at Cairo International Film Festival. The Idiot is expected to release this year. Lamba, who has been associated with many international films, says it is easier to indulge in crossover cinema than mainstream Hindi films. “It’s easier there… The work you bag, depends on your talent and qualification and script. However, there are other determining factors in Bollywood, like your saleability, celebrity status, proximity to a certain group of people, director’s name, budget etc. Europe and other indie international films are untouched by that. Budgets have to be justified on the right accounts,” he says.
