Periods

We still haven’t been able to show the colour ‘red’ in the advertisements of sanitary pads. Seriously, whom are we kidding here?

Periods
Kiran Gandi (centre), 26 allowed her period flow in London Marathon in April to create awareness for women who don’t have access to sanitary products

The first time I had a faint whiff of what periods are all about was when I saw a commercial on television which said something about napkins. The shiny wrapper was fascinating in the days when commercials were few and far between. Those were days when the advertisers were yet not comfortable showing the pad on screen. In the two and a half decade hence, little has changed. These days, the commercials show some blue liquid being poured over a pad to show how effective it is. We still haven’t been able to show at least the colour red in these advertisements. Seriously, whom are we kidding here?
So when news about the woman who ran a marathon without using a tampon came across, I smiled in glee. Kiran Gandi, 26, is a Harward graduate who ran the London marathon with what many people call ‘shame’ dripping down her legs. She did it for those women who don’t have access to tampons, besides trying not to be uncomfortable running a marathon with a pad stuffed in between the legs. Her story has gone viral on social media. Almost all newspapers have carried her story and some even her pics that have been prominently marked red.

Here at last was someone who wasn’t embarrassed about the spot that spread between the legs. For a second, I thought about the hygiene matters involved. But heck, yeah! How the fuck does it matter when the point is to send a strong message. It’s a natural bodily function without which the human race wouldn’t have grown to gigantic proportions. Yes, women have periods! And it is red in colour and not blue. And no, we don’t bite when we have this monthly ritual.

So the next time, you ask a woman if she is PMSing, read between the three lines. Or the three words. Be comfortable if she throws up words like periods or chumming in the casual conversations that you are having. Don’t turn red faced. Rather make her say it aloud. I say, gimme red!
