SUNIL GROVER talks about his debut movie Vaisakhi List, discovering his funny bone and Pratyusha Banerjee’s suicide. By SHREYANSH RAWAT
There are a lot of young actors who are inspired by your phenomenal success. What would you say to them?
(laughing) “Abhi toh main khud hi aspiring actor hoon (I am still an aspiring actor)
But you have definitely created your niche.
I think it’s a journey and you’ve to pursue on your own. You have to find your goals, your own key. Each individual has its own distinct style and one has to identify that. Some people are so natural in their pursuit while others imitate their icons. But over time, they realise they all have got an artiste inside who wants to express. Now this realisation may take time. I took very long to understand my own art form but ultimately got it.

Comedy Nights With Kapil had stoked controversies by the end of its run on Colors. How did you guys work under pressure or negativity?
There was no negativity as such. It was a humorous show. Our goal was to make people laugh. Yes, there was problem but then everybody faces some kind of issue or the other. An artiste performs better under pressure.
How did you grab your first Punjabi movie Vaisakhi List?
I was amazed that I was being given a prominent role in the movie. I confirmed from the director (Smeep) if it was a female character. (laughing). Well, truly speaking, a project like this can be a dream project for many actors who haven’t done a Punjabi movie before. I am very honoured to work with Jimmy Paaji and even Shruti. She is a great actor. There are many other legendary actors in the movie. Apart from making people laugh, this movie has got some emotional drama as well which made my experience even more exciting.

Pratyusha Banerjee is the latest victim of pressures that come along with stardom.
Challenges are everywhere. It’s very unfortunate what’s happened with her. It makes me sad. I don’t know what she was going through but my prayers are with her and her family. See, we are going to get pressures everywhere. Youth gets pressures of exams, the farmers get pressures of different kinds but one should not take extreme step of taking life. I personally suggest if anything of this sort happens in your life, just take two or five minutes of break. Those two minutes can change your life. So just hold on. Life is big and long and you have to respect it. There is nothing that you can’t overcome. You just have to keep walking keep going. Hardships become glorious in future I’ve seen. You should not take it to your heart.
