Coronavirus scare in India has hit almost all industries adversely. Fashion is not an exception. Therefore, Fashion Design Council of India, the apex body of fashion in the country, has initiated COVID-19 Support Fund (CSF) to help new and emerging designers and brands. And in this good move, something interesting has taken place that has caught the attention of fashion aficionados. Almost after a gap of 15 years, Lakme Fashion Week has come forward to join hands with FDCI to offer assistance in this Fund.

“Yes, it is encouraging that Lakme Fashion Week has come to the table to support FDCI’s special fund. They have committed to help financially as well as with ideas or thought processes as and when needed,” confirms Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI. For the uninitiated, the first fashion week in Delhi, or say India, was jointly launched by FDCI and IMG in 1999. But the six-year long collaboration ended in 2005, resulting in emergence of two leading fashion weeks, one in Delhi (India Fashion Week) and the other in Mumbai (Lakme Fashion Week).

Coming back to the latest initiative, we hear the CSF’s seed money was donated by Sethi and FDCI’s board members, and now the list is growing. “As soon we announced and released online notification regarding the thought of CSF, we received encouraging support from the fraternity. Our prime sponsor, Lotus Make-Up, ace designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Manish Malhotra, Rohit Bal and others immediately expressed their support,” Sethi mentions, adding that he has already received 100 applications from small businesses to seek assistance. “We will maintain transparency in the utilization of funds. I might not be a part of the Board that would look into the allocation of the money,” Sethi says.

Going forward, should we expect more interactions or collaborations between FDCI and LFW? “Never say Never,” he says. “The FDCI is a body which is always about alliances and collaborations. At the moment, we have got together for a good cause. If in future, more things happen which are for a common good, we are completely open. But don’t speculate anything as of now,” he signs off, concluding that we have shown there’s no camp in the fashion industry and we are all united in this difficult moment.
