While most of Bollywood stars fear of taking a political stand in public discourse, Bollywood’s reigning queen Kangana Ranaut has declared herself as “a big Modi fan”. She was speaking at News 18‘s Rising India Summit. “As a young woman, I think we need to have right role models. I believe in the graph and ambition of an ordinary man. We have a Prime Minister who was a chaiwallah. It’s not just his victory, but the victory of democracy. Right now is the time when we are going to have a breakthrough,” she said.
Kangana also stood by actor Swara Bhaskar, who was attacked online for writing critical open letter on Sanjay Leela Bhansali controversial film Padmaavat. “The way she was criticised and bullied was our loss. We, as a society, failed. She is a legitimate artist. I didn’t agree with her letter but I was okay with it. The entire criticism against her was based on the fact that she portrayed a character of a prostitute in a film. Swara is a strong woman and will write another letter in the next six months. But we do we tell to many other women whose stories need to be heard? Why are we asking women to shut up? I don’t know what is scaring people so much,” she said.
