Ever since a few companies announced ‘period leave’ to women, it instantly became a popular debate. Even celebrities have been sharing their divided opinions on the issue. Now, Twinkle Khanna, who’s the producer of PadMan, a film highlighting the use of sanitary pads by women, has commented on the debate. “The society already has got a plenty of excuses to hold women back and confine them to the four walls of the house. So, why to give them an added excuse to claim that women are any less capable. Which is why I feel that one should not use periods as an excuse to take leave from work.”
Twinkle was addressing media in Delhi along with PadMan’s cast. Actors Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, director R Balki and activist Arunachalam Murugunantham were present. “If you are open to talk about the issue, then you help the other person to get rid of the shame, so just talk as I myself do the same when my menstrual cycle is on,” said Radhika Apte.

The film’s cast has also thrown #PadManChallenge on social media urging prominent actors to pose their pictures with sanitary pads. Akshay Kumar feels the film has generated a great amount of awareness. “I am very sure and confident that there will be a lot of awareness after the film. When I wake up in the morning and browse social media, I see a lot of men talking about sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene,” he said. He also shared a recent incident after the film’s screening in Mumbai. “After the screening, I spotted a girl crying in a corner. She told me her mother-in-law doesn’t let her sleep with her husband every month during her periods. She said she was happy to watch the film and would be bringing her entire family to watch it next,” said the actor.
